What happens when the storage fills up?
The normal thing is for the system to start deleting the oldest and carry on recording, which is the behaviour to confirm and not to assume: there are configurations where what happens is that it stops recording. It is one of the first things checked on an inherited installation.
What usually surprises people is that filling up is not a failure, it is the normal state of a video system: a few days after starting, the drive is full and from then on it cycles. What has to be watched is not the percentage used, it is how many days of retention are really left, which is a figure the systems give and almost nobody looks at until something from three weeks ago has to be found.
Retention can be set per camera, and that is where space is gained with judgement: more days at the entrances and at the till, fewer in the corridors. On top of that, the maximum period is set by data protection law and not by the capacity of the drive, so the system is configured to delete by age even when there is space to spare.
