What does an operator workstation need?

What decides the machine is not the number of cameras on the system, it is how many images are shown at once at that workstation and at what resolution. Decoding video is the expensive job, and that is why the component that matters is a graphics card able to decode in hardware the format the cameras use, plus a network that reaches it with room to spare.

There is a technique that changes the approach and is worth knowing: most cameras can send several streams at once, one at high quality for recording and a lighter one for viewing. A workstation showing a large mosaic should be asking for the light stream and jumping to the quality one only when the operator enlarges an image. A badly configured workstation asking for the big stream for all sixteen tiles of the mosaic is going to struggle however powerful it is.

And then there is what is not computing: two screens as a minimum, because the operator needs the map or the alarm list on one and the video on the other; the height and position of the screens, which tells over long shifts; and a keyboard with a joystick if there are PTZ cameras, because working them with the mouse is slow and ends up with nobody moving them.
