At midday the doorway comes out white and you cannot see who is coming in. Can it be fixed?
Nearly always yes, and the fix in order is: move the camera, light the inside, and only then touch the settings. What happens is that the scene has the street in full sun and the inside in shadow at the same time, and the sensor cannot expose both properly: expose for inside and the doorway burns out; expose for outside and inside is a black smudge.
The function that attacks that is called wide dynamic range —WDR—: the camera takes several exposures of the same scene and combines them, so it saves the highlights and the shadows at once. It works well and it has two tolls nobody mentions: with fast-moving subjects it can leave ghost outlines when it combines the frames, and on some cameras switching it on cuts the frames per second available.
And there is one case where no WDR saves the image: the camera looking straight into a low sun, on axis. There what you do is turn the camera so the sun is behind it or to one side, even if you like the new field of view less, or put the camera inside looking towards the door instead of outside looking in. It is a decision about where it goes, not about the model.
