I have been told that 4K sees worse at night than 2 megapixels. Is that true?

It can be, and it depends on the size of the sensor. If the two cameras carry a sensor of the same size, the 4K one shares that surface between many more pixels, each one gets less light and at night the image comes out noisier. The lower-resolution one has bigger pixels and copes better with low light.

It stops being true when the high-resolution camera has a bigger sensor, a faster lens and better noise processing, which is exactly the difference between ranges. There are also units that at night group neighbouring pixels together to work as though they were fewer and bigger, and drop the night-time resolution in exchange for a clean image.

The practical consequence is that resolution is chosen scene by scene and not installation by installation. On a lit loading bay, plenty of resolution pays off. On a dark perimeter, the same megapixel figure gives a grainy image that also takes up more drive space, because noise does not compress well and swells the video bit rate in exactly the hours when you can see nothing.
