Do the cameras need a UPS?
It is needed for the recorder and for the network before it is needed for the cameras. If the power goes and the cameras stay powered but the switch or the server does not, nothing is recorded: the link you have to hold up is the whole path from the camera to the drive.
What you decide is for how long. Short backup power covers the brief dips, which are most of them, and lets the system shut down in an orderly way instead of losing the database to a hard cut, which is the most expensive fault and the most avoidable. Long backup power, lasting hours, is another installation and another quotation, and it only makes sense if somebody is watching during that blackout.
There is one point that gets forgotten: if the power cut is because somebody has thrown the main breaker, the outdoor cameras with their own power supply go off just the same. So on installations where it matters, the backup power goes in the plant room and is checked once a year by really throwing the main breaker, which is the only way to know whether it works.
