When do you need a flame detector?

When what can burn gives flame before smoke, or when the smoke is never going to reach the ceiling. The two typical cases are flammable liquids and gases —decanting, spray booths, tanks, refuelling areas— and very tall or open spaces, where the smoke stratifies or the air carries it away before it rises: high-bay industrial units, hangars, outdoor canopies, loading docks.

They look at the ultraviolet or infrared radiation characteristic of a flame, with logic to rule out whatever resembles one. And that is their limit: they need to see the fire. Any obstacle between the detector and the area it watches —a new rack, a machine, a parked lorry— creates a shadow that generates no alert at all. That is why their position is worked out by field of view and looked at again every time the layout changes.

Their false alarms come from direct sun, from reflections, from welding and from some lamps. They are dealt with by choosing the type well, by shielding and, when necessary, by requiring two detectors to agree before the general alarm is given.
