How do you hand video over to the police or to a court?
In a format that can be opened without having the system, and with what is needed to verify it has not been touched. The systems offer two routes: exporting in their own format together with a player included on the same medium, which keeps all the associated data and allows integrity to be checked; or exporting to a common video format, which opens on any computer and loses part of that information.
The prudent thing is to hand over both. The common format guarantees that somebody can watch it today without installing anything, and the native format with its player is what supports the verification if anybody asks for it. Alongside it goes what gives context: which camera it is, where it was, what time the system had and what it was synchronised with, and the exact clip exported.
Two practical warnings. Exporting many hours from several cameras takes up a lot of space and takes time, so it is worth narrowing the clip sensibly before starting. And once that recording is identified as relevant, it has to be separated from the automatic deletion, because otherwise the system will delete it when its retention period is up like any other.
