What is the difference between H.264 and H.265, and does it affect me at all?

They are the two ways of compressing video, and the second takes up around half for the same image quality. It affects you on the drive and on the bandwidth: with H.265 many more days of recording fit in the same storage, or the same cameras go down a thinner link.

The toll is the work of decompressing. A workstation showing many images at once in H.265 needs a graphics card that can do it in hardware, and some older programs and some mobile apps do not play it properly. Before deciding, you have to check that all three legs support it: the camera, the video software and the workstations it is going to be watched from.

There is a third thing worth knowing, because it is where the nasty surprises hide: nearly all the manufacturers add their own compression on top that greatly reduces the throughput when the scene is still, stretching the distance between full frames and lowering the quality of what does not move. It saves a lot of drive space and in exchange it can complicate frame-by-frame searching and exporting one particular instant. On the cameras that are going to end up in court, people are usually conservative about that.
