What is a multi-criteria detector and when is it worth it?
It is a detector that measures several things at once —normally smoke and temperature, sometimes carbon monoxide or infrared light too— and decides by combining the signals instead of by a single threshold. With that it tells kitchen steam or the dust a forklift kicks up apart from the smoke of combustion, which is exactly what somebody who has already suffered false alarms is after.
It is worth it where the environment is variable and it cannot be fixed by changing technology: mixed areas, buildings with different activity by day and by night, rooms with air coming in from the street. It is not worth it as a substitute for good design: if the problem is that the detector is above the toaster, multi-criteria will only make it take a little longer to go off.
On analogue panels their mode of operation can usually be changed by time band or according to the state of the installation. That is programming: it gets documented, tested and recorded in the report. It is not an adjustment you make over the phone.
