What is linear infrared detection?

It is a smoke detector that, instead of looking at the air passing through it, projects an infrared beam along the room and measures how much it is attenuated. It can be transmitter and receiver at opposite ends, or one unit with a reflector opposite. In line with part 12 of UNE-EN 54, it covers long strips with two devices, and that is why it is used in industrial units, atriums, churches, sports halls and high-bay warehouses, where fitting and maintaining dozens of point detectors on the ceiling is not reasonable.

It has two physical problems that have to be allowed for in the design. One: anything that interrupts the beam —a new run of shelving, an overhead crane, a balloon in a sports hall— gives a fault or an alarm. Two: structures move, a metal roof expands in the sun and the beam goes out of alignment, so the system starts giving faults in the afternoon and not in the morning. The units compensate for slow drift, but the fixing has to be firm and somewhere nobody touches it.

It is worth not confusing this with smoke barriers or smoke curtains, which are something else: fixed or motorised elements that confine smoke under the roof and form part of the building's smoke and heat control and exhaust, with their own series of standards. There our part is the signal that moves them; neither the curtain nor the ventilation is ours.
