How many days of recording will I get?
It comes from a simple sum: the throughput of each camera in megabits per second, times the number of seconds in a day, divided by eight, gives the megabytes per day for that camera. You add them all up and divide the available storage by that figure. That gives you the days, and that sum has to be in the handover paperwork of any installation.
What makes the sum wrong is not the arithmetic, it is the throughput you put into it. The real throughput of a camera goes up a lot with movement, with the noise in night-time images and with rain, so sizing with the average throughput of a quiet day leaves the system short exactly in the week of a storm. You size with the high throughput and you leave headroom.
And you have to leave the other half answered: what happens to that number if cameras get added tomorrow. A system handed over tight on drive space cannot be extended without cutting days of retention, and that is a much better conversation to have before than after.
