What backup does a video system need?
The configuration backup, which is the one almost nobody does. Recorded video is not backed up —the quantities are enormous and it replaces itself once the retention period is up— but the database with the cameras, the users, the permissions, the maps, the rules and the integrations is weeks of commissioning work, and it fits in very little space.
That backup has to be automatic, regular, kept off the server itself, and tested: a backup nobody has ever restored is an assumption. The test consists of bringing the configuration up on another machine and seeing that it starts, and it is what turns a server fault into an afternoon's work instead of redoing everything.
Alongside the backup it is worth keeping two more things, on paper or in a document that does not live only on that server: the camera inventory with their addresses and their credentials, in the client's name, and the licence keys with the detail of what they cover. Recovering a system without the licences is getting only halfway there.
