What is the facility code and why am I asked for it when ordering cards?
It is the number that identifies your installation within the card format, and it is what stops the credential from the company next door working on your door even if the employee number is the same. Without it, two different installations can issue the same credential.
This is where the most common delay in an access control project comes from: the number printed on the card is almost never the one the system stores. Between the two there is a format, a facility code and sometimes a conversion nobody documented. That is why cards are properly read on the visit, with a reader, instead of trusting a spreadsheet.
What you have to insist on at handover is a sheet with three things: format, facility code and the range of numbers issued. It takes a minute to write and it stops ordering cards three years from now turning into an investigation.
