How do you close the fire doors that are always held open?
With electromagnetic hold-open devices that release the door when the control panel gives the signal or when the power goes. A fire door only does its job closed, and day to day nearly all of them end up wedged open because they get in the way. The hold-open device solves both: the door stays open while everything is fine and closes on its own when it is needed.
Hold-open devices and their system have a standard of their own, and there are two ways of fitting them: powered from the fire control panel, or with their own local detector next to the door. The first is the right one in a building with a system; the second is used where there is no control panel, and then that detector also has to be maintained and also has to appear on the calendar.
What gets checked at each inspection is simple and almost never done: trigger it and look at whether the door closes right up to the frame and latches. A door that releases but stops a hand's width short because of a doorstop, a rug or a dropped door closer has closed nothing.
