Conventional panel or addressable analogue?

The practical difference is what the control panel tells you when it goes off. A conventional one groups the detectors into wired zones and says «zone 3»: somebody has to walk the zone looking for the lit indicator. An analogue addressable one identifies the specific device, with whatever text was written for it. When that zone is a thousand square metres and there is smoke, the difference is minutes.

There is more, and it does not show in the quotation. On the analogue one each detector returns a value and not a yes or a no, so the control panel can give a pre-alarm before the alarm, compensate for gradual dirt build-up, warn that a detector is dirty and keep the history of each point. That is what turns maintenance into something directed instead of a blind round.

The conventional one still has its place: a small installation, with a few clear zones and nothing to integrate with, works perfectly well and costs less. The mistake is choosing by the size of the building instead of by what is going to be needed later. If there will be extensions, if the fire system has to control doors or air conditioning, or if things have to be located quickly within large floors, addressable pays for itself on the first extension.
