If I change system, can the readers, the cabling and the cards be reused?
Almost always the cabling, often the readers, the controllers depending on the case, and the cards depend on two things that have to be checked with real cards before promising anything.
The cabling and the mechanical part —strikes, magnetic locks, door contacts, exit buttons, emergency buttons— usually survive a change of head end, and they are well over half the labour cost. The readers depend on which card technology they read and which protocol they speak to the controller in; if they run the old unencrypted protocol, changing them is the chance to fix that using the same cable. In wall electronics there are families of controllers that several platforms share, so sometimes only the software changes: that has to be verified device by device and not from a catalogue.
The cards are kept if the new readers read that technology and if the number the old system stored can be imported as it is, and there the usual trap comes back: the printed number is almost never the one the system stores. It is settled by reading real cards on the visit. And if the ones in use are the kind that get copied, keeping them means keeping the problem, so that part of the saving is worth looking at twice.
