What is antipassback and when is it needed?

It is the rule that stops the same credential being used to enter twice in a row without having left. It does two different things: it stops the card being passed back over the turnstile, and it lets the system really know who is inside.

For it to work you have to read on the way out as well: with no exit reader there is no anti-passback. And you have to choose how strict you want it. Hard anti-passback does not let through anyone the system believes is already inside; soft lets them through and logs the anomaly for somebody to look at; timed forgets after a while. Hard is the one that really protects and also the one that generates the phone calls, because all it takes is somebody walking out behind a colleague without presenting their card to be locked out when they come back.

That is why hard anti-passback nearly always comes with a barrier that forces people through one at a time, and with an automatic daily reset that forgives anyone left out of step. Fitted on a door that people hold open for each other, it adds no security: it adds incidents, and within a fortnight somebody asks for it to be switched off.
