Teal Neural

How many parts came out. And how many fell off.

Teal Neural counts the line from the camera: units, rate, jams and the exact moment the line rate broke. Without touching the PLC.

The line stops and nobody knows for how long.

The PLC knows whether the machine is switched on. It does not know whether the product is coming out right, whether a bottle has fallen over, whether there is a gap on the belt, or whether an operator has spent ten minutes repositioning boxes by hand.

Fitting a sensor for each of those things is expensive and slow: you have to stop the line, run cabling and maintain it. And each new sensor measures one thing and one thing only.

Meanwhile, the camera already mounted over the belt is seeing all of it.

The camera is already looking at the line.

You mark on the image what has to be counted and where. From there you get the number of units, the real rate — not the nominal one — and the exact gap where it broke.

And because it is video, when the number drops you can go and see what was happening in front of it at that moment. That is what a counter does not give you: the why.

You do not have to stop production to install it, and it does not touch the PLC.

What it understands.

  • Units passing a point, and the rate per minute or per hour.
  • Jams, build-ups and gaps on belts and conveyors.
  • Product fallen, badly placed or out of format.
  • Parts present or absent in a position: vials, caps, labels.
  • Fill level in containers, hoppers and reels.
  • Real machine stoppage time, and what was happening just before.

What it does not do.

It does not measure what cannot be seen. If the part is covered, inside a box, or moving at a speed the camera cannot resolve, there is nothing to understand: that is a sensor, not a camera.

The first thing we do with a line is look at the field of view. Sometimes the answer is that the camera has to move half a metre, and sometimes it is that this is not the job for us.

What it takes.

  • That the part can be seen: if it is covered or inside a box, this is a sensor and not a camera.
  • Line speed the frame rate can cope with. Very fast and edge-on, no.
  • Steady lighting. A line whose light changes every hour means fixing the lighting first.
